Adventure Stop #1

Cardiovascular endurance (aerobic endurance)

This is the ability of the heart, lungs, and muscles to do exercise over a long period of time.

The body is like a car. The heart, lungs, and muscles are like fuel lines, motor, and wheels of your car.
Fuel is pumped in the motor and the fuel lines deliver gasoline so the wheels can spin and move.
The heart and lungs act as a motor and deliver fuel (oxygen) to the muscle, which, like the wheels of the car, move.
Having aerobic endurance will help keep you from "running out of gas."

When you are active, you breathe harder and your heart beats faster so that your body is able to get the oxygen it needs for work and play.

Where is Your Heart?

The heart(click to view) is in your chest. It works like a pump. It pumps blood around inside your body. Your heart goes "thump, thump" as it works.

Take a Closer Look at the Heart

Blood from the body goes into a heart chamber. It goes through valves that open and close. Then the blood moves into blood vessels. The blood vessels carry blood all around the body.

Where are your lungs and what is their job?

Your body needs a special gas called oxygen to live. You get this oxygen from the air you breathe. Air moves from your nose, down your windpipe, and then into your lungs.

The lungsare like balloons that get larger when you breathe in and smaller when you breathe out.

What is The Cardiovascular System and Where is it?

The cardiovascular system is the system which contains the heart and blood vessels. Arteries (RED) are the vessels through which blood is pumped by the heart to all parts of the body. Veins (BLUE) are the vessels that carry blood from different parts of the body back to the heart.

Take a look at a animated picture of the cardiovascular system.

Take Care of Your Heart Now!

Doctors say people need healthy hearts. They say that children should take care of their hearts. Caring for your heart when you are young helps keep it working well for life.

How can you care for your heart?

   1.Eat healthy foods.

   2.Get lots of exercise.

   3.Have a checkup once a year.
